Geo. W. Gayle & Son "STANDARD" No. 3 Handmade Top Hat German Silver Frankfort KY. Circa -1900. Geo. W. Gayle reels were made from about 1883 to his death in 1896. He was a silversmith and watchmaker by trade. Son Clarence made them after his death. The 1850 Frankfort, KY US Census shows George worked for Benjamin F. Meek as an apprentice. George later went into partnership with his son, Clarence, in 1883 and that is when they made their first reels. George Gayle died in 1896 however his Son Clarence continued to make this reel known as the “Standard” along with other reel variations until the 1930s. This is the very nice solid German Silver solid heavy duty “STANDARD” Top Hat Reel. Reel spins amazing, its fast and very smooth with the single button clicker that functions perfectly. Spectacular one of a kind design style Gayle handle and full length foot are in fantastic condition. Fantastic early Kentucky reel by one of Kentucky’s best makers.
