John Kopf & Edward Vom Hofe "ACME WIRE REEL" Circa-1894

$535.00

John Kopf & Edward Vom Hofe "ACME WIRE REEL" Circa-1894. This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood reels ever made when it comes to the actual maker. First let me say this: This incredible reel is credited by patent as seen on this reel foot to John Kopf and historians tell me that one actually sits in his museum. However the patent only applies to the foot design, I have a copy of the patent below in pictures. Then you have Edward von Hofe and his patent as seen on this reel side plate. I have a copy of that patent also in pictures. The Edward Vom Hofe patent pertains only to the clicker device which some people say was the first reel this patented clicker was ever used on. You can also find this reel as seen in pictures below in the Edward Vom Hofe 1889 catalog. However if you go through the catalog you can also find many reels that Edward Vom Hofe sold at his store made mainly by Montague shown in the same catalog from 1889 which makes me wonder if he was just selling this reel along with many others. Last we have another theory. Located Just blocks away from Kopfs reel making business was a company called the “Acme Steam Wire and Iron Railing Co.” which makes it remotely possible Kopf hired out the wire spools to build this reel to them, named it after them and just recieved permission from Edward vom Hofe to use the newly patented clicker to complete this extremely interesting work of art. Everything including the clicker functions perfect on this fine reel. It spins fast and straight and it is clean. This reel is rarely seen and never in this condition.
